Fruitful Saturday

After procrastinating for 3 months, we finally got down to getting quotes from contractors/suppliers for the new house.

The day started at 9am (THIS IS REALLY EARLY considering it's a Saturday), met the first contractor, CF Builders, at Sri Emas and liaised with the grilles supplier for dearie's sis's house (which is a few doors away from ours).

The contractor, Jacky, gave us wonderful suggestions/remarks/opinion on what to do and what not to do with our kitchen and garage. One of the more professional contractors I've come across so far. However, professionalism comes with a price. He quoted us a sky-high amount for the renovation! Brick works, kitchen top, floorings, fencing, touch-up, electrical and plumbing work for the front & back was at RM23k!!! and that is exclusive of grilles, gates and doors. *PENGSAN*

Gave a nod to dearie and tho we both agree that he's very professional and experienced, he is way too expensive for us.

Went for Pan-Mee at Balakong next. Thereafter, proceeded to visit Kien Wai's house at Kajang Perdana (somewhere after the new Giant inside Saujana Impian). Prior to the visit, stopped by at one of the kitchen cabinet display shops. Gave the sales girl our kitchen measurement, and she quoted us RM3500 for just one row of cabinets! Blardy hell! When I asked her how much she's charging per foot run, she had the guts to tell us it's around RM350!!!! (and I thought the factory outlet at Sg. Long was expensive for charging us RM170/ft run!!!) Craziness wei!!!

Anyways, like I said, we were suppose to meet up with Kien Wai to see-see look-look around his new place. His house is beauuutiful!!! Can see that alot of thought and hardwork has been put together to produce such a nice warm home. Met both Kien Wai and Fen Fen, got some tips from them on how to do up the house, contact numbers for some suppliers, etc. I used the time to catch up with Fen2, someone whom I havent met since Form 5! She's a successful lawyer now and would be getting registered with Kien Wai soon.

After about 45 minutes there, thanked the couple and left for a bite at Secret Recipe. After filling ourselves with goodies (and calories), walked across to one of the big electrical shops at the mainroad. Dearie says the prices of electrical goods there are by far the cheapest that we've got thus far. Suprising but true. A Panasonic 1HP air-cond is only RM830, while the one with ironizer is RM930. Other stuff like televisions, fridge, washing machines are also very attractive.

Next stop was at Yap See Wing's electrical shop. He wasn't there so we couldn't get any quotes from him. Then we went to Janet's light shop (next to Blackforest Cake House). She was SUPER nice!!!! Explaning to us in detail on what we should be wary when doing renovations. How the cablings should be done. What we need to pay special attention to and gave us lots of prices of different lights/fans/air-cond/heaters and such. Saw two living hall lights (RM450 and RM500 each ) and ceiling fans for the hall and dining area (RM290 each). Saw another nice hanging light (RM190) for the dinning area, but because the ceiling fan that dearie has chosen come with lights, I had to give that a go :( Anyways, everything's not confirmed yet. We're in the midst of digesting all the quotes and jobscope of the contractors, as well as, deciding the actual layout for our kitchen.

Cant decide whether to knock off any existing walls or just build the extra wall. It seems to make our house more spacious should we knock the wall off, but by doing so, SHOULD I cook, I'm afraid the oil and such will dirty the house (yea, I know there are exhaust fans and hoods, but they cant suck off EVERYTHING, can they?)

So, still have to make that big decision there. Besides, need to determine the number of additional plug points to put around the house and to get the developer to check on the suspected leakage at the 1st floor. (damn!)

okie. That's all for today. Gotto bathe and head for porridge steamboat at Connaught with the family! :)

Ceiling fans : Check out the Panasonic Bayu fans, they are cheaper at RM200 for 4-blades and RM295 for 5-blades. All remote-control.

Kitchen cabinets : RM170 per foot run and RM350 per foot run. Have to check and see whether the "per foot run" is only for floor cabinets or also inclusive of the wall cabinets. Some contractors charge separately.

Air-cond and electrical items : Read newspapers everyday and look out for warehouse sales. They are much cheaper then. I got my Samsung 1.5hp aircond for only RM900, a 340litres fridge for RM900 and a 7kg washing machine for RM600 (the actual figures are in my office).

Exhaust fans and hoods still don't make your work easier. Hoods cost money too. My personal opinion is that it's easier to build another wet kitchen and keep your small dry kitchen. That way, you can have a nice dry kitchen with nice cabinets, and a simple wet kitchen where you just cook.

Preparing for a house is so much work hor? :P

    wahh.. u're such a house-reno expert! hahaha..
i'm trying to maintain the small dry kitchen also.. but not too effective-la. so mah-fan to stay in a "bird cage".. move here cannot, move there cannot. everywhere also not enough space :P

oh.. and the kitchen cabinets, both the quotes are for floor/wall cabinets (inclusive of the top). But i still think it's expensive! hehe
